A visit to the Locks
Children in F4 (year 3) paid a visit to the famous Bingley five rise locks as a part of their local study walk yesterday afternoon. This remarkable feat of engineering, lifting or lowering canal boats through five separate locks was built and opened in 1774. For over 200 years, the locks have moved boats up and down on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal over a height of over 60 feet, with our pupils given the chance to open and close one of the lock gates to allow canal boats to pass on this fascinating piece of local history.
